In China the most powerful generalized type of Chinese dragon are called Lung which is a horned and winged dragon symbolizing power and excellence. Most Chinese dragons do not have wings. Those that do are said to be over 1000 years old. The earliest Chinese Dragons can be traced back to around 5,000 BC. Chinese folklore contains many tales that Chinese are descendants of dragons. The Chinese and other people of oriental countries have always had a high reverence for the dragon, particularly the winged Chinese Lung.

Centuries of trade and cultural exchange with China have made the image of the dragon extremely prominent in Balinese popular culture and mythology, and this still stands true even today. Highly respected in Indonesian culture for their grace and strength, dragons are believed to be the guardians of the gods.
