An interesting and elaborate piece, this ashtray is carved to resemble a woven basket. But that is not the only weaving in this work, for a sea serpent runs a curving course through the perimeter. The creature’s sinuous body rises and dips, its scaly hide covered with jagged spikes. The dragon’s head rests on the perimeter, as if it were about to plunge back beneath the waves. Its wings are present along one side, indicating that it is a creature of the sky as well as the sea.
