Emulating the classic sword in the stone story but with a rather different twist, the rune-carved blade in this sculpture is embedded into the unyielding rock. A gargoyle pulls and tugs on the weapon with its all, perhaps inspired by the gargoyle face image in the center of the cross guard. It practically climbs the sword in an attempt to wrest it free from the stones, its wings unfurled, but the weapon is much larger than it is, and its trials are for naught. The sword’s pommel also serves as a candleholder.
